Seaside Piers prints

The seaside pier is by its very nature ‘other’. They are not really part of the land, nor of the sea, and one can walk on a pier as if through the air high above the beach and waves.

For the Victorians who built them , a pier was a human space created over the wild sea, a way of taming nature. But I see them as gateways,  to memories of the holidays of childhood, to places across the sea, to carefree days.

There are more than 60 seaside piers remaining around our coastline and these prints are part of an ongoing project to record all of them, mainly as they were in 2018 when I visited them all to take the photographs on which these prints are based.

As usch they are a snapshot in time  as they continue to evolve, be repaired or deteriorate. My intention is that the prints I make capture something of the essential qualities of each one

Below I’ve pictures of a few of the prints I’ve made to date. If there’s a particular  pier you’re interested in just ask as I' adding to this work on a regular basis.  You'll find a contact form here
